Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard is near to the border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a heritage stretching back to Roman times, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it can be found next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's believed that there existed settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historical relics and coinage discovered in the area give evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (built by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered show that they were residing in the region in all probability from the sixth century. The village existing at this time was not mentioned until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, encompassed a far greater area than simply the town alone, and included the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be put on before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants over the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow throughout the ensuing years and the construction of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be described as a blooming market town that has seen increased development in modern times.
