Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the county boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a historic past extending back to the Roman period, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the nearby town of Linslade and it is roughly mid-way between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is located near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is considered that there had been settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early relics and coinage found in close proximity offer evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market during the tenth century, and artifacts discovered denote that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood most probably from the 6th Century. The village existing then wasn't documented till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a significantly wider area than merely the town itself, and contained the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not added prior to the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it appropriate to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding over the following generations and the coming of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town evolve and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a thriving market town that has witnessed accelerated development in the past few years.
