Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard is near the border betwixt Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a past extending back to Roman times, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is found very close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there had been settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, age-old relics and coinage picked up in close proximity give proof of this. The historic Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who introduced the market place during the tenth century, and artefacts found show that they were dwelling in the local area very likely from the 6th Century. The settlement as such wasn't cited until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a lot wider area than only the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town could possibly have been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get added until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a variety of tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding over the succeeding generations and the construction of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town which has seen increased development in the past several years.
