Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is considered that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, early relics and coinage picked up in close proximity give proof of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who introduced a market during the tenth century, and relics discovered suggest that they were residing in the vicinity undoubtedly since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was isn't listed till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a substantially greater area than just the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not included until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it appropriate to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a great many tenants over the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger over the ensuing decades and the coming of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw it evolve and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a thriving market town that's seen improved development in the recent past.
