Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the border in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a story harping back to Roman days, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is located near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there had been settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early artefacts and coins unearthed nearby offer evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, cut through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who were using the market place in around the 10th Century, and relics discovered reveal that they were dwelling in the local area perhaps from the 6th Century. The village as it was is not listed until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, incorporated a substantially greater area compared to the town itself, and incorporated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town will probably have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't applied up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to several tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding during the ensuing generations and the appearance of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town evolve and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prospering market town which has witnessed increased development in current times.
