Located in the county of Beds, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the county border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of around 37,000 and a story extending back to Roman days, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is located near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coins discovered nearby give evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now named the A5, went through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities uncovered mean that they were settling the local area more than likely from the sixth century. The commune as it was then isn't cited till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a significantly wider area than just the town alone, and covered the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town could perhaps have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't added on till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to an assortment of tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger through the following generations and the establishing of of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town which has seen greater development in current times.
