Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the county border betwixt Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a past going back to the Roman era, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is found near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's thought that there existed settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early artifacts and coinage picked up in close proximity offer evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now termed the A5, went through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of the village at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who developed a market in around the 10th Century, and artifacts picked up show that they were settling the neighbourhood possibly from the sixth century. The village as it was then wasn't reported until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embodied a far wider area than merely the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not appended till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to many different tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).
