Situated within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard is very close to the county border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about 37,000 and a historic past stretching back to the Roman era, when the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard History: It is considered that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early artefacts and coins uncovered in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place in about the 10th Century, and relics stumbled upon indicate that they were residing in the locale quite possibly since the 6th Century. The commune as it was then isn't cited until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a far wider area than merely the town itself, and included the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't put in before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants over the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger throughout the following years and the development of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a booming market town that's seen greater development in modern times.
