Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard is very close to the county boundary in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of around 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the times of the Romans, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjoining town of Linslade it is about mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it sits near the Chilterns and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coins unearthed in the area give evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place during the 10th Century, and antiquities unearthed reveal that they were settling the neighbourhood in all likelihood since the sixth century. The village existing at this time is not remarked upon until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, encompassed a considerably bigger area than just the town itself, and included the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't put on before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow during the ensuing years and the development of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a busy market town that has witnessed increased development in current times.
