Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a story stretching back to Roman times, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is placed next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there had been settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coinage discovered in close proximity show evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through the neighbouring towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who set up a market during the 10th Century, and antiquities picked up suggest that they were inhabiting the vicinity more than likely since the 6th Century. The village as such isn't described till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a substantially bigger area than merely the town itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be added on till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to an assortment of tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing over the coming years and the building of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town which has witnessed greater development in the past several years.
