Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to 37,000 and a history stretching back to the days of the Romans, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it can be found very close to the Chilterns and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is believed that there had been settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, ancient relics and coinage stumbled on nearby give evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (built by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who introduced a market during the tenth century, and artifacts picked up show that they were residing in the neighbourhood in all probability from the 6th Century. The settlement as such isn't observed till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a way wider area than merely the town alone, and incorporated the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not added on before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants through the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the succeeding decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a booming market town that's witnessed improved development in current times.
