Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the boundary between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a story extending back to Roman times, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's approximately halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is located near to the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coins found near by show proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who developed a market during the tenth century, and relics picked up show that they were living in the area almost certainly from the 6th Century. The village as it was was not mentioned till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, encompassed a substantially greater area than simply the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get inserted up until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to several tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding during the coming decades and the coming of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a thriving market town that has witnessed improved development in modern times.
