Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there had been settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, old relics and coins discovered in close proximity give proof of this fact. The olden Watling Street (made by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who developed the market place in around the 10th Century, and relics uncovered show that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood most likely since the 6th Century. The settlement existing then was not mentioned till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a significantly larger area than only the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not added on prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it essential to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to many different tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).
