Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of approximately thirty seven thousand and a heritage extending back to the Roman era, when the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjoining town of Linslade it is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it lies very close to the Chiltern Hills and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, old artifacts and coinage stumbled upon in close proximity give proof of this. The olden Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and relics found show that they were living in the area more than likely since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was is not listed till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, encompassed a substantially greater area compared to the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name will have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be added on until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to many different tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger over the ensuing generations and the building of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that's seen improved development in modern times.
