Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Bedfordshire, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lies very close to the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to Roman days, at which time the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is situated close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, early relics and coinage stumbled upon in the area give evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market in about the 10th Century, and artifacts picked up suggest that they were settling the local area in all likelihood since the sixth century. The settlement as it was then was not referred to till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, encompassed a significantly larger area compared to the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get added before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it beneficial to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants through the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow throughout the ensuing decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town which has seen increased development in recent times.
