Leighton Buzzard History: It is believed that there were settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, old artefacts and coinage found in close proximity offer proof of this. The historical Watling Street (established by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who set up the market place during the tenth century, and artefacts unearthed show that they were inhabiting the locale undoubtedly since the sixth century. The commune existing at this time wasn't remarked upon until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a much wider area compared to the town alone, and covered the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name appears to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be applied till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to an assortment of tenants through the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger through the succeeding generations and the appearance of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town that's seen increased development in the last few years.
