Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lays very near to the county border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately 37,000 and a past stretching back to the era of the Romans, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade it is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it can be found near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, early relics and coinage found in close proximity offer proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now called the A5, cut through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who set up the market place during the tenth century, and artifacts picked up show that they were residing in the region very likely from the 6th Century. The village as such wasn't referred to until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embodied a lot bigger area compared to the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name may perhaps have originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get applied before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to an assortment of tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing throughout the ensuing years and the coming of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a busy market town that has witnessed increased development in the past few decades.
