Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the county border betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to Roman days, at which time the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's about midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is situated very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there existed settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coins unearthed nearby offer proof of this. The age old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up the market place during the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled on indicate that they were settling the vicinity most probably since the sixth century. The settlement existing then wasn't observed till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embodied a much wider area than only the town by itself, and incorporated the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't added on before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow through the succeeding years and the coming of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw the town evolve and develop.
